Our studies show that when reductions of more than 90% are achieved and hair-free intervals greater than 6 months are maintained, the results can be preserved for a very long term.

Answering the question of how many sessions are needed has nuances. It is not the same to seek partial reduction as to aim for total elimination. At least 4 years of treatment may be required in areas such as legs, bikini, and underarms to reach reductions of more than 90%. On the face, the average reduction may be around 65%.

Electrolysis perfectly complements laser results, especially in those cases where the reduction remains at 65% (as often happens on the face).

It consists of inserting a very fine cannula into each hair follicle and applying an electric current that destroys the follicle, preventing the hair from growing back. It is highly effective on all types of hair and skin color, including light, blonde, white, or fine hairs that the laser does not effectively capture.

A key point to offer excellent results is to have at least two types of lasers that allow versatility in treatment parameters. Since 1996 we have used the highest quality equipment.

On the face, both laser and electrolysis have their limitations. On the laser side, both the presence of dense areas of thick hair and fine hair create natural barriers that force the practitioner to adapt the parameters specifically. In both circumstances (dense hair), it should be considered that coverage is not complete with a single session. The above is demonstrated by observing different hair lengths that sometimes follow rows, showing the areas with low exposure.

We deceive ourselves quite a bit when we claim to have full coverage in a single visit. This does not hold true even in low populations where, within a month, it is possible to observe residual hairs that have grown without major interference.

There are several reasons to explain hair regrowth on the face after laser:

• The first reason is to avoid burns due to overexposure.
• Another reason is the use of power levels that prevent uniform overlapping.
• Finally, the interval of appointments within the same session.

We take the interval corresponding to a 30-day period as a session for facial hair removal. Within a month, the hairs that were well exposed to the laser have fallen out, as well as the residuals and/or those resistant to treatment.

The patient sometimes thinks they have no hair, but at the start of treatments, the truth is that a single visit leaves a very large amount of hair untreated. If the treatment has not been suspended, no one will notice the paradoxical stimulation, but it is very risky to set a cap on the number of sessions only to later have cases that will generate great disappointment for the patient. One must therefore consider a scheduled “weaning” of the sessions in cases that arrive progressively with less significant amounts of hair.

What are the conditions for starting treatment on the face?

• Do not start laser cases with patients who do not take the treatment seriously.
• Manage the intervals between visits very efficiently. The laser has the possibility of treating hair that has not yet emerged.
• Electrolysis requires that the hair be at least one millimeter long, and in cases of abundant presence of thick dark hair and also white hair, both therapies will have to be used.
• When choosing laser, the need to have more than one type of equipment will be observed.

On the body, the criteria of spacing the sessions at adequate intervals used for the face are met with equal rigor.

The most requested areas are the underarms, bikini, and legs, which are the areas most prone to pseudofolliculitis due to old shaving techniques.

Areas with thick and dense hair are frequently more painful at the beginning of the treatments. In these areas, it is shown how the higher density creates the need to adapt the procedure technique.

Areas with medium-thickness hair such as the trunk and limbs can be more tolerated but also need some rigor in the intervals, which should become increasingly distant.

The skin has heat and pain sensors. Heat should be considered a normal sensation, as its absence would mean that the energy dose is insufficient. In areas with darker skin, pain could guide the operator to avoid burns. Pain must be avoided.

A commonly used resource is to add cooling systems before and during exposure. Persistent burning could mean that scabs will occur one or two days after the procedure.

However, longer pulses are, although safer, more painful as exposure time is prolonged, a period in which the heat signal accumulates and generates greater discomfort.

These pulses are really necessary in the presence of thick hair, as they get the hair to fall out without being burnt, creating an effect of having used “wax.” The strategy of applying short pulses initially creates high combustion, leaving hair without effectively receiving the laser, the same hair that continues its growth due to the incomplete action of the laser throughout the session.

Two general types of equipment must be considered depending on the purpose pursued in the session, tolerance to the procedure, and previous results.

The diode laser generates less external hair combustion when used in long pulses. Its action is immediate, but it requires the area to be shaved beforehand to have a deep action and not burn the hair on the skin.

This equipment allows treatment without the need to shave, provided the hair is not too long or thick, achieving exceptional effectiveness at the same pulse length.

Hair removal of white, light, or red hair is not possible with the laser. Electroepilation (or electrolysis) is the only definitive option. Its main limitation is when there is a very high amount of hair, since each one must be treated individually.

The initial intervals are weekly, and the sessions are spaced out as the hair decreases. An effectiveness between 80% and 85% is presumed in the long term. It is possible to be a little disappointed at first because, unlike the laser, electrolysis does not act on hairs that have not yet emerged to the surface.
