Laser and Electric Hair Removal in Bogotá

Laser hair removal is the method of choice when there are difficulties with traditional methods. For nearly 40 years, the laser has been used in medicine, demonstrating safety and efficacy, especially in extensive areas and in patients with high density of thick, dark hair.

Laser Hair Removal

Our studies show that when reductions of more than 90% are achieved and hair-free intervals greater than 6 months are maintained, the results can be preserved for a very long term.

Answering the question of how many sessions are needed has nuances. It is not the same to seek partial reduction as to aim for total elimination. At least 4 years of treatment may be required in areas such as legs, bikini, and underarms to reach reductions of more than 90%. On the face, the average reduction may be around 65%.

Electrolysis (Electric Hair Removal)

Electrolysis perfectly complements laser results, especially in those cases where the reduction remains at 65% (as often happens on the face).

It consists of inserting a very fine cannula into each hair follicle and applying an electric current that destroys the follicle, preventing the hair from growing back. It is highly effective on all types of hair and skin color, including light, blonde, white, or fine hairs that the laser does not effectively capture.

Cutting-edge Technology at Unilaser Médica

A key point to offer excellent results is to have at least two types of lasers that allow versatility in treatment parameters. Since 1996 we have used the highest quality equipment.

Diode Laser

Our Primelase® laser adjusts different types of wavelength and pulse times. It is extremely versatile and suitable for multiple skin types and hair colors.

Solid-State Laser

The Candela® laser is world-renowned for its extreme efficacy on a wide range of hair colors and skin types, including lighter brown hair tones.

Radiofrequency

The Viridex® system is unique in Colombia. It is an ultra-pulsed radiofrequency device specifically designed to avoid the traditional complications of electrolysis.

Facial laser hair removal in Bogotá

On the face, both laser and electrolysis have their limitations. On the laser side, both the presence of dense areas of thick hair and fine hair create natural barriers that force the practitioner to adapt the parameters specifically. In both circumstances (dense hair), it should be considered that coverage is not complete with a single session. The above is demonstrated by observing different hair lengths that sometimes follow rows, showing the areas with low exposure.

We deceive ourselves quite a bit when we claim to have full coverage in a single visit. This does not hold true even in low populations where, within a month, it is possible to observe residual hairs that have grown without major interference.

There are several reasons to explain hair regrowth on the face after laser:

  • The first reason is to avoid burns due to overexposure.
  • Another reason is the use of power levels that prevent uniform overlapping.
  • Finally, the interval of appointments within the same session.

We take the interval corresponding to a 30-day period as a session for facial hair removal. Within a month, the hairs that were well exposed to the laser have fallen out, as well as the residuals and/or those resistant to treatment.

The patient sometimes thinks they have no hair, but at the start of treatments, the truth is that a single visit leaves a very large amount of hair untreated. If the treatment has not been suspended, no one will notice the paradoxical stimulation, but it is very risky to set a cap on the number of sessions only to later have cases that will generate great disappointment for the patient. One must therefore consider a scheduled “weaning” of the sessions in cases that arrive progressively with less significant amounts of hair.

What are the conditions for starting treatment on the face?

  • Do not start laser cases with patients who do not take the treatment seriously.
  • Manage the intervals between visits very efficiently. The laser has the possibility of treating hair that has not yet emerged.
  • Electrolysis requires that the hair be at least one millimeter long, and in cases of abundant presence of thick dark hair and also white hair, both therapies will have to be used.
  • When choosing laser, the need to have more than one type of equipment will be observed.

I want to remove my body hair with laser in Bogotá…

Complete and permanent hair removal is a process of several years. If you live in Bogotá, we are a good option.

On the body, the criteria of spacing the sessions at adequate intervals used for the face are met with equal rigor.

The most requested areas are the underarms, bikini, and legs, which are the areas most prone to pseudofolliculitis due to old shaving techniques.

Areas with thick and dense hair are frequently more painful at the beginning of the treatments. In these areas, it is shown how the higher density creates the need to adapt the procedure technique.

Areas with medium-thickness hair such as the trunk and limbs can be more tolerated but also need some rigor in the intervals, which should become increasingly distant.

The Best Types of Permanent Laser Hair Removal: Diode and Alexandrite

Painless laser hair removal…

The skin has heat and pain sensors. Heat should be considered a normal sensation, as its absence would mean that the energy dose is insufficient. In areas with darker skin, pain could guide the operator to avoid burns. Pain must be avoided.

A commonly used resource is to add cooling systems before and during exposure. Persistent burning could mean that scabs will occur one or two days after the procedure.

Pulses and Strategy

However, longer pulses are, although safer, more painful as exposure time is prolonged, a period in which the heat signal accumulates and generates greater discomfort.

These pulses are really necessary in the presence of thick hair, as they get the hair to fall out without being burnt, creating an effect of having used “wax.” The strategy of applying short pulses initially creates high combustion, leaving hair without effectively receiving the laser, the same hair that continues its growth due to the incomplete action of the laser throughout the session.

Clinical studies of permanent hair removal conducted at our Center

We have conducted several studies to understand our long-term results. The epidemiology department and residents in the aesthetic medicine specialty at the Universidad del Rosario participated in their development.

  • Analysis of the number of shots used in different hair removal areas. Dr. Sara Gutiérrez Donado
  • Long-term results in 4 areas: Long term laser hair removal
  • Long-term results of facial laser hair removal: Study by Dr. Sergio Sanchez
  • Comparison of equipment in underarm hair removal. Study by Dr. Julián Alvarez

  • Follicles disappear permanently.
  • Hair quantity decreases progressively with each session.
  • Hair of any color is eliminated through electroepilation.
  • Pseudofolliculitis (ingrown hairs) is completely cured.
  • Radically increases hair-free time.
  • There is no need to let hair grow before going to your laser session.
  • Highly effective even in areas of thick and dense hair.

Which is the best laser for permanent hair removal?

Two general types of equipment must be considered depending on the purpose pursued in the session, tolerance to the procedure, and previous results.

Comparación de la acción de láser diodo y Candela 755

Diode Lasers: Primelase®

The diode laser generates less external hair combustion when used in long pulses. Its action is immediate, but it requires the area to be shaved beforehand to have a deep action and not burn the hair on the skin.

Solid-State Lasers: Candela® (Alexandrite)

This equipment allows treatment without the need to shave, provided the hair is not too long or thick, achieving exceptional effectiveness at the same pulse length.

Everything you need to know (Effectiveness and Care)

None. The laser has been used in practically all areas where body hair grows.

Our work at Unilaser Médica defined results of >90% reduction at more than a year as the standard for permanent. It was found that at least 10 sessions were necessary considering all areas.

However, 80% of patients achieved more than 90% long-term reduction in a range of 16 to 20 sessions. The face is the most complex area, where treatments can require an average of 30 sessions.

comparative table of reduction > 90% according to the number of sessions

More than 18 visits over a period of at least 4 years achieved the highest rates. At our center, we offer packages of 5 and 7 sessions, which are sufficient to obtain a significant effect before moving on to maintenance sessions.

Burns and paradoxical hair growth are the main complications of the laser. In cases of electrolysis, inflammation and some minor skin hollowing may occur.

A representative effect of inconsistency in the treatment is paradoxical hair stimulation after the laser, which occurs if the patient abandons the sessions for several months.

Repigmentation after Alexandrite laser burn

Evolution of a superficial burn with Alexandrite laser on the skin of the abdomen. Gradual repigmentation that begins in the first month and is completed by month 6.

Persistent hair after laser

Decrease in the amount of hair with persistence of some of medium and thick thickness. Electroepilation of the remaining hairs.

Legs are the area that best responds to the laser given their conditions of lower density. The face is the least effective area (sessions can last years), but the control of thick hair on the face is achieved very quickly in the first few months. Follicle miniaturization is one of the biggest advantages.

Care, Shaving, and Timing

A diode laser will burn the hair on the skin and will not have deep action if not shaved beforehand. To avoid having to shave, we use the Candela laser, provided that the hairs are not too long or thick.

Tracking 7 sessions session by session from left to right

Tracking 7 sessions session by session from left to right

  • Arrive at the session with tanned skin (do it before your vacation).
  • Apply depigmenting agents or abrasives on the treated area (burns may appear).
  • Abandon the treatment irregularly.

Paradoxical hair stimulation caused by laser on the neck

Depends on the professional’s instructions. It is almost always better NOT to do so to better evaluate the result. Furthermore, waxing will remove many hairs that could have been treated with laser.

By day 7 after the laser, “burnt” hairs that have not yet fallen out are observed. By day 20, few persist, and by day 30, some new ones begin to appear. That is why not doing touch-ups within the cycle ostensibly decreases the results.

Laser underarm hair removal

Fifteen days after the laser for hair removal

Close-up image showing hairs that have not fallen out and no regrowth is observed on day 26.

In principle, it is better not to shave at the beginning of the treatment when there is a lot of thick hair, because the razor generates inflammation. It is better to wait for them to fall out on their own or gently pull them out. Those that do not fall out need a touch-up at our center.

Laser beard hair removal

Laser first session results

An initial approach of more visits can achieve a complete first session which could also be called “sessions.” The number of visits decreases in the course of the second session.

Laser hair removal in the bikini area

Not performing touch-ups or visits during the course of the session ostensibly decreases the results.

Periods between sessions to perform the laser

Comparing results at 30, 75, and 45 days.

  • It is a question to answer in many ways.
  • If hair has remained after the session, different hair lengths are observed in the following session.
  • Adding sessions or touch-ups before the hairs come out would allow them to be captured by the laser, and this would be difficult to observe; the benefit would be given after doing sessions without apparent hair but justifiable in the densest areas.
  • Few sessions without touch-ups will give much more discrete results.

Electric Hair Removal and Special Cases

White or Light Hair

Efecto inmediato de la electrólisis

Hair removal of white, light, or red hair is not possible with the laser. Electroepilation (or electrolysis) is the only definitive option. Its main limitation is when there is a very high amount of hair, since each one must be treated individually.

Timings and Results

The initial intervals are weekly, and the sessions are spaced out as the hair decreases. An effectiveness between 80% and 85% is presumed in the long term. It is possible to be a little disappointed at first because, unlike the laser, electrolysis does not act on hairs that have not yet emerged to the surface.

Can the ears be depilated?

Depilación pabellones auriculares

Yes, the auricles can be depilated. Some lasers have limitations and it is necessary to protect the eardrum in these cases, so it is ideal to complement the treatment with electric hair removal.

Expectations and Results of Electric Hair Removal

Is it possible to be disappointed at first?

Quite possible at the beginning of the treatment, because, unlike the laser, electrolysis will not act on hairs that have not yet emerged to the surface.

What results does electric hair removal have?

It is presumed to be between 80% and 85% in the long term. What we have studied so far is that, when there are good follow-up photographs, a hair can regrow up to twice after electrolysis before disappearing.
